Literature review of orofacial muscle contraction detection tool in children

Abstract

Introduction: American Academy of Oral Medicine (AAOM) confirms that oromandibular dystonia or also known as orofacial dystonia is a movement disorder that causes paroxymal or continuous muscle contraction of the affected facial muscles. Dystonia involving the oral cavity is described as Oromandibular Dystonia/Oromandibular Dystonia (OMD). Dystonia muscle contraction can interfere with some orofacial motor activities such as mastication, swallowing and verbal and non-verbal communication, which may be explained by uncoordinated and aberrant muscle chewing activity with antagonist contracting. Any disturbance in one of the components of the chewing system will have an impact on other components, so it is necessary to know how functional and how these components move in the chewing process. Method: Literature searches were obtained from several literature study sources related to the topics to be discussed, create a synthesis table of information from the literature/journals used as a reference, conduct a literature review then analyze the similarities and differences of the literature. Conclusion: There is a detection tool that can be used to see the activity of orofacial muscle contraction in children, including: Electromyography (EMG), Iowa Oral Performance Instrument (IOPI), myoscan, Mechanomyogram (MMG).
