Abstract
Pangium edule Reinw (Pangi) is a plant reported to have antibacterial effects. However, nothing is known regarding the antifungal characteristics of the Pangi, particularly concerning wood-rotting fungus. This study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of Pangi leaves and seed-shell extract in inhibiting the growth of the wood-rotting fungus Schizophyllum commune. The powder of Pangi leaves and seed shell were extracted using maceration with methanol as the solvent. Fungi were inoculated with Pangi leaves and seed-shell extract containing Malt Extract Agar (MEA) at various concentrations. 25, 50, 75, and 100 ppm were utilized as concentration variations. Fungal growth was observed until the mycelium was covered in MEA without Pangi extract (control). Diameter measurements were performed on samples and controls to achieve the Anti-fungal Activity (AFA) value. The result showed that Pangi leaf extract at concentrations of 25, 50, 75, and 100 ppm had an AFA value of 100 per cent and was a very strong category. The Pangi seed-shell extract yielded AFA values of 100 per cent at concentrations of 25, 75, and 100 ppm. The AFA value of Pangi seed-shell extract at a concentration of 50 ppm was 95 per cent, with a very strong category. In this sample, the mycelium of S. commune can reach a maximum diameter of 2.2 cm. Therefore, leaf and seed-shell extract from the Pangi has the potential to act as a natural antifungal preservative.
